1843 Braided Hair Large Cent, Mature Head, scarce N-16, R.4, PCGS MS65BN CAC.

Ex James G. Macallister 10/20/1930 – unknown – Stack’s 3/17/1987, lot 220 – Manuel Ahumada 3/1997 – Robinson S. Brown, Jr., Superior 6/2/2002, lot 159 – Dan Holmes, Goldberg’s 1/30/2011, lot 69 – Gene Heard, Goldberg’s 6/2017, lot 353 - Robert Kellert.

An important late date, tied for finest known of this rare variety. Choice, uncirculated surfaces. Lustrous with significant mint red on each side, about 25% is original coppery-orange while the remainder has toned to a pleasing light olive brown. There are a few tiny strike-through marks on the obverse but very little in the way of post-mint abrasions and the reverse is especially pristine. Destined for a top late date die variety collection but also significant as a premium example of the Mature Head Red Book which is not easy to find with the sort of mint color seen here, regardless of die variety. EAC 63.
