1786 New York Copper, NON VI VIRTUTE VICI, Small Head, Baker 13, PCGS VF detail.

Ex (presumably) New York Stamp & Coin Co. 5/1900, lot 387 - Donald Groves Partrick, Stack's 11/1974, lot 333 - Archangel Collection, Stack's Bowers 10/26/2018, lot 7087.

An important rarity as both a New York copper and Washington piece. The obverse is one of our favorite dies of the entire pre-federal copper series featuring the first portrait of Washington on a coin and the legend NON VI VIRTUTE VICI, translating to "we have conquered not by violence, but by virtue." Fewer than 30 examples are known, making every offering a significant opportunity. The present piece is well-detailed, with sharpness that could easily be called XF for the issue. Glossy dark brown surfaces with some scattered patches of pitting and scratches in the fields from an attempt to smooth out the roughness. The surface issues are mitigated to some extent by the strong detail and natural gloss, and the coin overall is quite presentable as an example of the type.
