1652 Massachusetts Willow Tree Shilling, Noe 3-C, R.6, PCGS XF detail.

Ex Laird U. Park, Stack’s 5/1976, lot 3 - Archangel Collection, Stack’s Bowers 10/2018, lot 7002.

72.0 grains. An attractive, sharp, and well-made example of the iconic Willow Tree shilling. Shows a wonderful amount of tree detail, about as much as any example does, and a good majority of the legends. There are traces of luster and hardly any wear, just some strike weakness in places as is all but unavoidable on this crudely made type. The reverse shows traces of old gilding, an interesting feature, and the scrapes seen across each side are no doubt remnants of the long-ago removal of this gold coating. The coin has been untouched long enough, however, to have developed beautiful cabinet toning featuring vibrant blue around the peripheries. A thoroughly pleasing example of Willow Tree coinage and while not cheap, still an unbelievably good value compared to what similarly sharp specimens have sold for in recent years.
