1652 Oak Tree Sixpence, IN on Reverse, Noe 16, R.5, PCGS XF45, nicely toned.

Ex Brown University, John Carter Brown Library Collection, Pine Tree Auctions Galleries 5/21/1976, lot 625 - Archangel Collection, Stack's Bowers 10/26/2018, lot 7006.

32.3 grains. An exceptionally attractive example of this challenging Oak Tree denomination. Slightly lustrous surfaces with colorful antique toning in shades of blue, violet, and rose. Softly struck at the upper left obverse and opposing reverse, missing a few letters of the legends in those areas, elsewhere bold and fairly well centered. One thin scratch on the obverse near where the first S in MASATHVSETS would be, but otherwise free from marks. Adding to the desirability is the very early die state, the earliest we've seen, which allows for a well-defined tree and minimal die cracks affecting other detail. An all-around delightful piece that would be difficult to improve upon.
