“Inde Et Lib” (Latin, short for “Independence And Liberty”) is found on several different pre-federal state coppers of the 1780’s. Since these coins were replacing the British halfpenny in commerce, “Inde Et Lib” replaced “Britannia” as the legend on the coins as a symbol of the young nation’s unique identity and principles.
